Joy To The World

Joy to the World," written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), is a hymn whose text dates back to 1719. While it has become one of the most popular Christmas hymns to date, Watts pulled inspiration not from the nativity story but from Psalm 98. The second verse of the song envisions "fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains" joining with men in songs of praise. Similarly, Psalm 98 is all about making music to the Lord and the whole Earth singing before him.

In Advent, we look back at the Child in the manger while also looking forward in anticipation for Christ's return. There is no doubt this song brings joy as we remember Christ's birth, but in this season of anticipation and waiting, I wonder how singing this piece through the lens of Christ's second coming will fill your heart with joy. Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King!
